US copyright law provides songwriters an opportunity to regain ownership of works usually from a music publisher, depending on when the song was released/published. Reversion is not automatic, however, and there are certain steps creators must take to regain the rights to their works. As a general matter the author, after the set period of time, can serve a Notice of Termination, and reclaim their rights. Successfully terminating a copyright transfer is not always simple. This is not legal advice, since the process can be uncertain, we strongly suggest that those seeking to undertake a reversion seek formal legal advice from an attorney experienced in these matters.
The Notice of Termination should include:
-Name of writer who is terminating
-Name of grantee to whom notification is made and whose righter being terminated
-Title of work, authors, original registration number and date, and effective date of termination
-Brief statement reasonably identifying the grant to which the notice of termination applies
-Names, percentages, relationships, and address of the person(s) effecting termination
-Record the notice with the Copyright Office
